A Very Naughty Christmas (Woodward Productions), at Alex Theatre - 85 minutes, plus interval

Mix the bawdy with the festive and you have the makings of a cheeky, cheery and fun filled show (based on a series of musical numbers and vignettes).

That is just what executive producer and co-creator Alex Woodward, and choreographer and co-creator Daniel Venz set out to do.

The skit writers are Emily Kristopher, Stephen Hirst and Matt Semple.

Eight years on and the laughs are still coming thick and fast.

Smut and innuendo are the name of the game, which the enthusiastic patrons lap up.

There is singing, dancing (including tap), stripping, acrobatics and storytelling, with audience participation being a big winner.

The strong cast has a wonderful time and so does the audience.

Eight performers revel in the irreverence of it all.

Among them is the adults only version of Santa. A hirsute Tim Paige fills the big man’s shoes and wins us over from the get go.

Others include dance captain Asmara Soekotjo, Callum Marshall, Grace Laing, Jarrod Moore, Jordan Twigg, Justin Wise and Kate Yaxley.

A three-piece band – musical director Martine Wengrow on keyboard, Stella Anning on guitar and bass, and Facu Alvarez on drums – keep the good times rolling.

What is so wonderful about this production is that political correctness is nowhere to be seen.

This troupe is poised, polished and potty mouthed. The songs are tuneful and the routines well-rehearsed. They go down a treat.

There is no shortage of red, green, black, white, gold and glitter in the racy costuming, which has been designed by Isaac Lummis. There is also plenty of skin on show.

Sex toys and large gift boxes to cover the privates prove to be useful props.

It is a joyful show, but of course if you are easily offended stay away, because what you get is very naughty … but nice.

It moves along at pace. There is never a dull moment and one routine simply rolls into the next, without missing a beat.

So, prepare yourself for 85 minutes of hilarity and vice as you unlock early festive fare in the form of A Very Naughty Christmas.

It is playing at Alex Theatre until 21st December, 2024.
